Mozart's The Magic Flute

Sept. 18-27 ,CCP Little Theater

The Magic Flute ” is a fantasy masterpiece, which combines animation, black theater, and puppetry performed by live artists. It will be directed by Kokoy Jimenez, the man behind the longest running children's educational television program, “Batibot”.

The story takes the audience into the magical adventures of a little girl named Ana who finds a magic flute. This mysterious musical instrument opens the door and carries her into a magical world. As she suddenly realizes that she has entered a different realm of reality, Ana finds herself entangled in the lives of various supernatural beings from a higher kingdom.

With the powers of the magic flute in her possession, she encounters and victoriously conquers all sorts of tests and trials as she meets Prince Tamino, Princess Pamina, the bird man Papageno, the dragon the High Priest Sarastro, and the Queen of the night. A magical adventure filled with exciting music, spectacular dances, amusingly strange characters and valuable lessons to learn makes The Magic Flute a must-see for the young and young at heart.

La Boheme

Oct. 3, 4 and 5, 8pm, CCP Main Theater

Probably the most well-loved opera to date, Giacomo Puccini's “La Boheme”, a co-production of the Philippine Opera Company and the Cultural Center of the Philippines will be staged on October 3, 4 and 5 2008 at the CCP Main Theater.

The production promises a unique take on Puccini's immortal love story. Using the original libretto, the production will transport “La Boheme” to a modern day colony of young independent artists searching for their place in the sun. The tragic love story of Mimi and Rodolfo is juxtaposed against a vibrant and tempestuous indie art scene.

This 2008 production brings a talented young cast and fresh, inventive staging to this operatic tour-de-force. Playing the lead roles are tenors Juan Alberto Gaerlan, Dondi Ong and Seattle Opera based Gary del Rosario debut as Rodolfo. Sopranos Jennifer Uy and Maribel Miguel make their debut as Mimì while sopranos Ana Feleo and Elaine Lee play Muzetta. Baritones Lawrence Jatayna and Jesus Baang plays Marcello, Joseleo Logdat and John Campos plays Colline and Schaunard respectively. Sharing the event is the Philippine Philharmonic Orchestra. Acclaimed stage director Floy Quintos directs this modern opera to be sung in its original Italian language.

Master Class

Oct. 9-25, Carlos P. Romulo Theater , RCBC Plaza

Philippine Opera Company will stage the production of a Tony Award-winning play, MASTERCLASS , about the legendary opera diva Maria Callas. This moving drama depicts the fictional class conducted by Callas at the end of her career for three opera students during which she recounts her long tumultuous life as opera's grand dame and reveals rare glimpse of her private life as paramour to the billionaire Aristotle Onassis.

MASTERCLASS will run at the Carlos P. Romulo Theater, RCBC Plaza with 10 performances on October 9, 10, 11, 12, 17, 18, 19, 23, 24 and 25, 2008 at 8:00 p.m.

Starring Philippine Cinema and Theater's diva, Ms. Cherrie Gil in the title role of Maria Callas.
